October month marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the world. And while much progress has been made in the treatment and survival of breast cancer, there is still much work to be done! Did you know? Incidence of breast cancer has risen by 33% in ten years. Every day in Ireland 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Source: Breast Cancer Ireland I guess you could say that your boobs are my business now! Whatever the shape or size, I can certainly get you a bra to fit, but it’s up to you to look after those girls. Whether you have melons or fried eggs (or as I fondly say about my own – a sliotor in a sock), please remember to check them regularly. If you notice anything unusual, schedule in for a visit with your GP, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
CURRENT STATISTICS IN IRELAND:
- One in nine women will develop breast cancer in the course of their lifetime.
- Incidence of male breast cancer is one in 1000.
- We have 3,100 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year.
- 30% of women are diagnosed between the ages of 20-50 years.
- 34% of women are diagnosed between the ages of 50-69 years.
- Only 5%-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary.
